Dr. Michael Lau is the Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Cellulite Institute and Clinic. He is a gynecologist, cosmetic surgeon and pelvic plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Michael Lau has been elected to be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Lau received his specialty training in gynecologic and pelvic surgery under Professor C. Paul Hodgkinson, a recognized pioneer in the field of urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery. He received further training in cosmetic surgery under Dr. Robert Alexander and Dr. Ken Tucker, world renowned cosmetic and plastic surgeons. With the extensive cross field training in multiple surgical disciplines, Dr. Lau has developed a unique set of skills and experience to offer the most comprehensive treatment services for women to improve their health and beauty. In this process, it became very obvious to Dr. Lau that cellulite is one of the most common cosmetic conditions that causes concern in women. For this reason, he has developed the Cellulite Institute and Clinic to address the problem of cellulite, a challenging condition for many women.

Dr. Lau has the unique background that enables him to be in the forefront of the cellulite treatment and research. He has the necessary training to tackle the problem of cellulite by using scientific and advanced technologic approach. Prior to medical school, Dr. Lau was doing graduate studies in nuclear physics and chemistry towards a PhD degree. With his scientific background, Dr. Lau has been able to apply the latest technology into medicine and surgery. He is one of the first surgeons in the U.S. using laser for gynecologic surgery more than 25 years ago and he is one of the first surgeons using microwave for endometrial ablation in the U.S. He is currently working on using HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) to treat fibroid tumors non-invasively, also various projects in applying multiple energy platforms to treat cellulite and other cosmetic conditions.

Dr. Lau’s professional career has been concentrated in applying technology innovations to convert invasive surgeries into minimally invasive or non-invasive procedures, collaborating with researchers at the University of Washington and the University of Utah. His work has resulted in the award of U.S. patents. At Oxford, he concentrated his studies in technology innovation development and is involved in related projects there. Related to his scientific work, Dr. Lau is a Fellow of the American Society for Laser in Medicine and Surgery, a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and a member of the American Chemical Society.

Beyond the cross training over multiple medical, surgical, and scientific disciplines, Dr. Lau received his education in a truly global setting. He studied at the University of Oxford in the UK, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Seattle, and Michigan, and thus has a global perspective in his view of health and beauty for women. Having been trained in classical Chinese art and being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, his approach to beauty is simplistic and profound. At the same time, being a scientist, Dr. Lau’s approach to aesthetics is scientifically based and exacting. While Dr. Lau finds cellulite one of the most challenging cosmetic conditions to address, he also believes that through clinical and scientific research, the impact of cellulite in many women can be addressed.
